As we know, 3D Printing is working very well in many fields but no one might have thought about printing a live organ. Yes, you heard it right. The Medical Science has done a huge amount of improvement towards saving the life. As we all know, there are lakhs of the patient who are waiting for an organ transplant to lead their healthy life. There are very few numbers of organ donors and need is much more than that. So, the printing of a human organ might work wonder towards saving the huge number of lives. These engineered organs could minimize this gap.
Still, after the decades of research over regenerating organs, the only successful transplant of the re-engineered internal organ into a person is a Bladder. A hollow organ which is made from a thin sheet of tissues. The growing of cells has been working from years but producing tissue which turns into a fully functional organ didn’t get success too much.
But due to advancement in technology the 3D printing of human organ is possible with a layered cell on a Bio-Printer and produce the same tissues. These tissues will turn into an implantable full-scale human organ.
Organovo is an early-stage medical laboratory and research company which works towards designing and developing the 3-dimensional human tissue for the research and medical applications. The technology of Organovo allows living human tissue cells to assemble into a defined pattern and the complex structure of making the human organ. As the laboratory partnered with the United States based Invetech company developed a bio-printer which prints and places the same human cells into a 3-dimensional form to grow the human organs and the blood vessels.
Doris Taylor, the Director of the University of Minnesota’s Centre for Cardiovascular Repair manufactured the first living tissue. With his research team, in the year 2008, they succeeded in developing organs like Heart, Kidney, Lungs, Pancreas, and Liver, regenerates the scaffold into a functioning organ when supplied with Oxygen and Blood.
Then, in 2010, the Decellularization Technology came into commercialization when the Miromatrix Medical Inc. of Eden Prairie received the license for it. As the researcher said that, the technology will enable the replacement of the entire organ taken from the donors, stripped of their cells, or transplanted as a Biomesh or recellularize from the person who receives the organ or compatible cell lines.
While in many cases the 3-dimensional printed organs could function in a proper way which will help enough the patient’s body to heal itself. As well as, the living test tissue provide researchers the opportunity to test the drugs before implementing it over a living person. In addition to this, it will bridge the gap between the preclinical testing and the clinical trials.
How 3D Printing Organ Works?
Once the largest tissue is identified, the basic and initial step is to develop the bioprocess protocols which require to generate the multicellular building structure. The basic or largest produced tissue is then dispensed from a BioPrinter. The BioPrinters use the layer-by-layer approach which is scaled from the targeted Output.
Ass the tissues are build up vertically to achieve a three-dimensional structure to create the channels or spaces within the tissues to mimic features of native tissue.
However, the replacement of the largest tissue is a huge future goal to achieve. Still, the development in regenerating organ has gained through the development of supplement tissue therapy, which works as the key guide for the development of functional organ replacement.
